presentation/discussion: visual weight and light direction
composition exercises: thumbnail sketches experimenting with visual weight. You will compose three or more small sketches (5x7 or larger) that demonstrate experimentation with visual weight. Use the same three objects in each and change the scale, value contrast, placement, and so forth to explore the differences. Be prepared to post your three sketches towards the end of class. I do not want one refined piece, I want three sketches.
Complete the sketches started in class and be prepared to discuss which one works the best and why.
We will work with cutting and gluing next week, so please have any kind of paper (even newspaper is fine), scissors, and glue.
identify the elements of the image that appear lighter than others
how is weight conveyed?
how are color, line, value contrast, size, shape, and proportions used to create visual weight?
how could the balance be changed in any of these illustrations?
what is the difference between fine art and scientific illustration and how might the distinction affect composition?
